You are tired at work, but also exhausted at home. Stopping work or reporting sick is not necessarily the best way to combat your fatigue. How do you get your energy back? Here under I will give 10 tips for a better work-life balance. Go through these ten steps before you start thinking about more radical measures. But employers play an important role too and you will see how.
So following the tips, I will conclude with measures that employers can take, but first a few words about the importance of the work/home life balance.
The importance of work/private balance
These days there is a persistent misunderstanding that you have to be busy to be successful. Those who live optimally do not even have free time. But is that really true?
Lately it was found that ignoring the importance between work and private life not only contributes to employee dissatisfaction and results in a large staff turnover, but is also partly the cause of high absenteeism rates and lack of motivation and commitment. These are things that all come at the expense of the productivity and profitability of the company. Companies should prevent these problems by taking measures that balance work and private life. Later on in this article more on these measures.
So, here are the things you as an employee can do.
1. Set priorities
You often do not put the most energy, time and money into what you find important. For example, you find it important to maintain good relationships with family, friends and girlfriends, but you don’t have the time. You put little energy in it and hardly any money. You think work is important, but you notice that you are gradually putting in sixty hours a week. Then it will not give you any satisfaction for a long time and will therefore not generate as much energy. You want to do something for society, but where do you get the time? Moreover, you would also love to go to some sport lessons lessons!
You now make a schedule, divide a sheet into five columns and think about what you find important in your life. Don’t censor yourself. It is not about the values that you would like to have, but that you actually feel. You then indicate how much of your income you spend on each value, how much time you spend and how much energy you put into it. And: does this activity provide you with energy or exhaust you? You put the answer to that question in the fifth column.
Your energy is limited, as you will get only so much per day. If you take a commitment, you must delete another energy eater. I tend to put my energy in positive things, if that is work then so be it. If you also have a family you love, then you will have split your energy. And so on.
3. Take a break
Interrupt your work at peak times and thereby prevent the tipping point of negative stress and overload. Immerse yourself in a difficult problem or assignment and do your best. But walk away in time to do something else, do a breathing exercise, get coffee, sleep or chat. Let go of what concerns you and notice how you suddenly become creative and come up with solutions. Go back to work with renewed self-confidence from this awareness.
4. Re-charging your batteries
Build in space for activities that give you energy. For example, meet up with a friend to see a movie once every two weeks or hire a babysitter so you can exercise. Buy tickets for a baseball game and surprise someone and so much more.
5. Manage your time off duty
If you have a busy family, get up half an hour earlier to start the day quietly so that you don’t leave the house stressed out.
Make your limitations your strength. You may want to stop working because you have just had twins. But before that consider how you could combine work and home. If your family is your priority, ensure flexibility in your work, focus on results and negotiate good conditions in work and in the family.
7. Follow a training course
Follow a training course if you (temporarily) stop working to look after the children. A course strengthens your employability and looks good on your resume. Stopping work results in a salary arrears that you will never catch up with (those who have been away for three years earn 63 percent of what a colleague earns that continues to work.) With extra training you limit those arrears and show that you are motivated.
8. Say no
Say diplomatically no to matters that you are not so good at and yet will drain your energy. Practice with small, not so important things and develop this skill.
9. Be (sometimes) uncompromising
Do not make too many compromises at the expense of yourself. Don’t let the work make you so exhausted that you come home exhausted and you are too tired to do anything for yourself. Then make a compromise at the expense of work, for example a private job that is not finished!
10. Start small
Experiment with small changes in all areas: work, home, yourself and the community. For example: make sure you can work from home for an afternoon; buy flowers for the house every Friday; let go of your high demands and view yourself with more compassion; make your skills available to a cultural institution or non-profit organization for a few hours a week.
Here is what employers can do
Of course you should know that the success of your organization is always highly dependent on the employees (their skills, expertise, commitment and quality awareness). In order to be able to make a contribution within the organization and to be successful, employees must find a balance between the responsibilities that they have in private and in the work environment. By providing opportunities for employees to achieve this balance, organizations are better able to attract, retain and motivate experienced staff.
Provide work / private facilities
Work / private facilities are defined as an approach to the employer-employee relationship based on the idea that people work best when they have a good balance between their job and other aspects of their lives. Work / private facilities can be divided into three groups:
– arrangements for flexible working hours, such as part-time work and reduced working weeks
– leave arrangements, such as maternity leave, parental leave or sabbaticals
– facilities at the workplace, such as a day care center, financial assistance with general care tasks and assistance with dealing with stress.
Studies have shown that these are in huge demand by employees.
Favorable effects of work / private facilities
Studies in the US have shown that offering such facilities offers five specific benefits:
1 Recruitment becomes easier – All companies investigated agreed that offering work / private facilities helps to attract potential new employees.
2 Employees leave less quickly – All employers could name employees who had stayed with their company for longer due to work / private facilities. Most companies were able to estimate the number of employees who would have left in the absence of such facilities.
3 Improve morale and commitment – Most of the companies surveyed felt that the morale and commitment of the employees who had to look after children had been improved by providing work / private facilities.
4 Absence due to absence – Most companies felt that sick leave associated with the care duties had decreased.
5 Increased productivity – Many of the companies surveyed indicated that employees with flexible working hours were more productive than employees with standard working hours.
Any entrepreneur whose business plan currently offers no room for work / private facilities will have to think seriously about his future if he wants to compete successfully in the fast changing world of tomorrow. It is time for employers to recognize that their employees are an investment that they need to nurture and cultivate in order to benefit optimally and ultimately ensure that the company remains healthy in the future.
Not doing this will ensure stress, sickness and burnout with you, the workers and you should never let this happen. Be prepared for such a situation and have a suitable alternative ready. Here is one I would highly recommend and that is to become your own boss and work at this in your time off duty.
